Marta Glazen, MIlliner
The term Milliner dates back to the early 16th century, as a "milner," vendor of bonnets and dressware in Milan, Italy.
Though not from Milan, Marta was born quite near, in Koper, Slovenia, on the Adriatic Coast bordering Italy.
After many years of training and practice in the textile arts, Marta opened her millinery shop in 1996 in downtown Cleveland at the Tower Press Artists' Lofts. Her third floor suite was the home of many parties among the artful people who gathered to enjoy her work. After two years of steady business, she moved to a storefront on Clifton Boulevard, a stone's throw from her beloved Edgewater neighborhood.
The shop is unusual in many ways. First, it is opened on weekends only, Friday-Sunday. (she spends the rest of the week sewing and shopping for the many unique treasures in her shop)
On weekends, however, she is available to her many customers, who like to chat, have a cup of Vivienne Provence Rooibos Tea, and a sweet while
they browse the latest finds and talk "fashion!"
Marta's inventory changes often, new items arrive weekly. Customers can find unusual clothing, sometimes shoes, handbags and accessories, and of course, many, many hats.
On the wall is the quote "So many hats, only one head."
Some visit her shop and sheepishly exclaim that they don't wear hats, which is no worry, because there are so many other things to entice. But don't be surprised if Marta slips a hat on your head that makes you exclaim "Hey, I do look cute in that!"
